Blinds Cleaning Guide: How Often & How To Do It Right

5 October 2026 · Vivanova Blinds, Gold Coast

If you live anywhere from Coolangatta to Hope Island, you already know the Gold Coast throws a lot at your windows -- salt air, humidity, dust, and some of the highest UV radiation levels in the world. All of that settles on your blinds over time, which is why cleaning them regularly isn't just about looks. It's about keeping them working properly and lasting as long as they should.

We get asked constantly during our free measure and quote visits: "how often should I actually be cleaning these?" So here's our honest, practical answer -- plus how to do it without damaging your blinds.

Why Cleaning Matters More Here

Coastal living is beautiful, but salt air and humidity are tough on window furnishings. Dust mixes with moisture in the air and can settle into fabric weaves, slat grooves, and tracks, especially in bathrooms and kitchens. Add Queensland's intense UV exposure, and blinds that aren't maintained can fade, warp, or stiffen faster than they should.

A quick wipe-down isn't just cosmetic -- it protects your investment, keeps allergens down, and helps blockout and light-filtering fabrics keep performing the way they're designed to.

How Often Should You Clean Each Type

There's no single rule for every blind in the house -- it depends on the room and the material:

  • Kitchens: Grease and cooking residue build up fast. A light dust weekly and a proper wipe-down monthly keeps things in check.
  • Bathrooms: Humidity is the enemy here. Check for mould or mildew monthly, particularly on window sills and bottom rails.
  • Living areas and bedrooms: These generally need less attention -- a dust every couple of weeks and a deeper clean a few times a year is usually plenty.
  • Coastal-facing windows (Broadbeach, Currumbin, Burleigh Heads): Salt residue can build up on frames and tracks, so these benefit from more frequent wiping than inland homes in Nerang or Robina.

As a general guide, most Gold Coast homes do well with a quick dust every one to two weeks and a more thorough clean every one to three months, depending on the room.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide (By Material)

Roller blinds (blockout or light-filtering): Start with a soft brush attachment on your vacuum or a microfibre cloth to remove dust. For marks, use a damp cloth with mild soap and water, working gently so you don't stretch the fabric. Always let the blind dry fully before rolling it back up to avoid mould forming inside the roll.

Plantation shutters: If you've got ABS polymer shutters (our top pick for bathrooms and coastal homes thanks to their moisture resistance), they can handle a damp cloth and mild cleaner without worry. Aluminium shutters are similarly low-maintenance. Basswood shutters need a drier approach -- dust regularly and use only a barely damp cloth, since timber doesn't love excess moisture.

Cellular/honeycomb shades: These trap dust in their pleats, so a vacuum with a brush attachment on low suction works best. Avoid soaking them, as it can affect the cell structure that gives them their insulating properties.

Venetian blinds: Close the slats one way, dust, then flip and dust the other side. For a deeper clean, a cloth dampened with warm soapy water run along each slat does the trick.

Child-Safe & Motorised Blinds -- Special Care

If you've got cordless or motorised blinds (which meet Australian child safety requirements and are a popular choice for families across the Coast), cleaning is just as easy -- stick to dry dusting and occasional gentle wiping, and avoid spraying cleaning products directly onto motor housings or control units. For motorised blinds connected to Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Apple HomeKit, a quick wipe of the remote or sensor with a dry cloth is all that's needed to keep them running smoothly.

One extra tip: never pull or yank fabric to clean stubborn spots, especially on light-filtering fabrics -- a gentle approach always wins.
